Check your versionsThe Garmin Communicator Plugin is at version 4.1.0 as I write this, and making sure you are up-to-date will solve a bunch of problems, most notably with the 310XT. To speed up the download make sure you remove all the data from your old runs. By some fluke i have found the solution - control and F5 (to refresh), unplug the garmin, plug it back in and then (as long as the internet connection is strong, not always the case at teatime) it should work. This makes your browser grab the absolute latest versions of everything it needs from the Fetch server, and will solve some problems straight away.
